Pet hair soaks up oil… Excess pet hair soaks up LOTS of oil, and can help save the ecological environment affected by the Gulf Coast oil spill. Normally, we fight the fact that hair and fur absorbs oil – it’s exactly why we shampoo dogs on a regular basis. When put to the right use, this natural phenomenon can help minimize disaster.
Here’s how it works. You schedule a bathing or grooming appointment for your dog’s spring cleaning at K9 Kingdom in Wexford. We do what we normally do, and then save all the brushed out hair and leftover clippings. We pack up our collection of hair and fur at the end of the week and donate it to Matter of Trust. Their volunteers manufacture oil absorbing mats or floating oil absorbing booms out of the hair. They distribute these products to areas that need it (everything is getting funneled to the Gulf right now), and let the hair go to work.
Rather than letting your dog shed all over your carpets, just to vacuum it up and throw it away, why not put that hair to good use? The more a dog is shedding right now, the better!! There’s never been a better time to get your dog a makeover. You get the benefit of a clean, fresh dog, and the sea life affected by the oil spill gets a better chance to survive.
Watch a video that shows you exactly how the hair gets put to use! There’s an amazing demonstration of how absorbent the mats are. Please share this with your friends so that we can all make maximum impact.

Could we help too? We don’t get a lot of hair, but what we get is yours.
Time will tell, but it seems as tho we’ll get plenty of hair from the dogs we groom – so sending new dogs in need of grooming is the best way to help! However, if you have moderately sized boxes, they would be a fantastic donation to the effort!
Hi Mary!
We’re now accepting walk-in donations for hair! We’re just asking $2 per grocery bag size donation, just to help cover costs of shipping and handling. From now until May 30th, send it over!
Yes, Matter of Trust has been working with BP since the beginning. More information can be found on their site: http://www.matteroftrust.org
